I started with a pile of parts
inside a very rough body. The
year was 1979 and I had dreams of a street rod by the time I graduated high
school. As you can tell from the
picture, I was quite optimistic!
Most of the parts inside turned out to be junk from a 1942 body. The frame is from a 1957
Chevy. It happened to have the
right wheel base, a swingarm suspension and a beefy
enough frame and rear end to handle the motor. Speaking of motor… in an
odd twist of fate for the tow vehicle pulling this pile of metal home, the
motor came from the family wagon in the left of the picture. It was a 1972 Pontiac Gran Safari wagon… 455 CI of beef. |
Here is the final product…
after a mere 14 years of on again and mostly off again effort. My father ended up finishing the
upholstery while I was off getting married and starting a family. He surprised my wife and I by calling and asking if we would come meet him at a
parking lot where he claimed to be broken down. This picture was taken about a month
later. At this cruise-in we took
this car and my fathers 65 Buick Special.
We ended up taking turns driving the other car to the auto parts store
for replacement parts for the other.
